Brighton, CO -- A 10-year-old boy died in what police ruled as a DUI crash on Saturday.
Around 7:20 PM, the Brighton police responded to the crash on I-76 at Bromley Lane. They found four people had been inside the vehicle at the time of the crash: the driver, a man, and two children.
Police identified the driver as Karena Cecil, a 27-year-old woman from Brighton. Officers arrested and charged Cecil with vehicular homicide, careless driving causing injury, two counts of child abuse, revoked driving status, and driving under the influence, among other charges.
The deceased boy, Gavin Cecil, was a third grader. The authorities have not released information about how he died in the crash.
The man and other child, Gavin’s sibling, sustained minor injuries in the crash; they received treatment at a local hospital.
Police determined that Cecil was driving the vehicle east when she lost control and drifted off the road. She hit and rolled over the median, and the vehicle wound up in the westbound lanes of the road.
This is not Cecil’s first drunk driving offense. In both 2017 and 2019 she was charged with DUIs. She previously pleaded guilty to both charges.
