Pueblo, CO -- A motorcyclist died after being hit by what police say was a drunk driver.
The motorcyclist, who the coroner identified as Kenneth Bernal, was struck by a vehicle at the the intersection of Orman and Lake Avenues.
The vehicle then fled the scene, but witnesses called the authorities.
When the Pueblo Police arrived at the crash scene, they found Bernal sustained serious injuries. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
Witnesses gave the authorities a description of the vehicle that hit Bernal on his motorcycle. They located the described vehicle driven by Jared Sandoval at the intersection of Routt Avenue and Madison Street.
Police say Sandoval’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit when they pulled him over. Sandoval was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run, driving under the influence, driving under restraint, among other charges.
Bernal, 59, was a Rocky Ford motorcyclist. The Pueblo County Coroner notified his family of his death.
Sandoval is due in court for the June 21 arrest on June 28. He was previously charged with another DUI and was still on probation; he is due in court on June 24 for that prior case.
This crash marks Pueblo’s fourth motorcyclist death of 2021, three of which were DUI-related.
